Both coaching and mentoring are learning relationships which help individuals or groups to take charge of their personal or business life. Both activities can be focused on specific or wider area. Coaching and mentoring share many similarities but there are still differences between them.
Coaching is a »process« which enables learning and progress and also better performance because of that. It is knowledge that creates a good coach. They understand process as well as different styles, skills and techniques which depend upon the needs of the circumstances in which coaching takes place.
Mentoring encourages an individual to follow the path of older and wiser colleagues, who can pass on knowledge, experiences and open doors to otherwise out-of-reach opportunities. Coaching is not generally performed on the basis that the coach has direct experience of their client’s formal occupational role unless the coaching is specific and skills focused.
You might think coaching and mentoring are similar or even the same thing. But they are not. Mentoring is the way of learning where mentor shares his experience, knowledge and gives advices. Mentor’s goal is to develop functional abilities of less experienced. Mentor helps mentee reach his or her goals in career or personal life. Mentor is someone with whom clients can discuss about their ideas or problems. They try to teach mentee how to accept advice based on mentor’s experience when they were in similar position as the mentee is now.
On the other hand coach is not giving any special instructions how to manage organizational processes and tasks, as well as they don’t provide technical consultancy about how to do a certain task, because coach is not necessarily introduced with the field of work or function the client has.
Coach’s job is to help the client clarify their business goals and encourage them to become more effective and successful at their job. Coach assumes that the client knows all the answers and their task is to help them facing the issues they are dealing with. By using open communication coach supports client to find their own answers.
Mentor is needed when an individual wants to take a look into thinking and activity of another professional (mentor) in a particular field.
We can fully customize mentoring program and create an individual program which fits your needs. Combining more different approaches, mentoring program can be even affective (coaching, workshops, mentoring…)
